Rosie's Riveters -- Jaelle

One of the (many) great sections over on Aarti’s splendid Booklust blog is Rosie’s Riveters, a series of posts on riveting female characters in fiction.

My own (rather breathless) contribution, on Jaelle, from Guy Gavriel Kay’s The Fionavar Tapestry, is here (though I recommend the others more!)

  1. Did you get my email asking YOU for an email detailing why you disagreed with my stance on GGK's wordiness? Please let me know! I'm intrigued to hear your thoughts!

  2. Aarti,

Aargh, sorry! I'm inexcusably rubbish at checking e-mails...I will sort that out today.

Briefly: a] I think my use of the word "disagree" was perhaps over the top, and that what I actually meant was that I don't actually 'disagree' as such, but, rather, that I think it's justified in terms of the effect it creates -- in other words, it's not wordiness in the sense of simply a pile of words, but a deliberate and justifiable technique for creating a particular effect or emotion. (I'm thinking in particular of the more "operatic" high fantasy moments in The Fionavar Tapesty.)

However: b] I know you weren't in any way suggesting Kay was some sort of vebose hack in any case, so I may have gone wrong there too, but I'll reply and (try!) and explain what I meant properly!

  4. Do we have to read books around here or can I wait for it to come out on video?

    PS
Silly typo before... interesting, but silly

  5. Lee,

Seeing how long it takes me to read something, as opposed to watching something on DVD (or, indeed, bless my luddite-ness, still, occasionally, on video), waiting for a filmic version is certainly not to be scorned...

In order to "prove" this, my next post will be a review of a book by a film critic, which, I like to think, straddles both worlds admirably...
